KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s king said on Saturday that the attorney general risked defying a royal order by delaying former prime minister Najib Razak’s release from prison, insisting there was no ambiguity in the pardon he had granted.
Najib, 73, was jailed for his role in the looting of state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), one of the largest thefts from a sovereign wealth fund in history. King Sultan Ibrahim granted him a conditional pardon in September, allowing him to serve the rest of his sentence at home once he paid a fine of about $12 million.
On Friday, the attorney general blocked Najib’s transfer to house arrest after the fine was paid, saying his office needed more clarification on the pardon.
The king said on Saturday there was nothing to clarify, calling the pardon “clear, evident and without any ambiguity”.
