In a pastoral letter to her diocese penned in late August, Scotland’s first female bishop set a deeply spiritual tone as she gave notice of her retirement plans.

Bishop Anne Dyer, 69, said her flock had become ‘very dear’ to her and that through ‘joyful’ and ‘very challenging’ times it had been a privilege to serve as their bishop.

‘I am much changed by this experience, and very grateful to God for all the grace and encouragement I have received,’ she wrote.
