This wasn’t how I expected my Saturday to go: I was coming down an escalator when I saw what appeared to be bits of the roof raining down on visitors.
An acoustic ceiling panel above the escalators on the ground level of the Powerhouse fell onto the grating. The grating stopped most of the debris falling but some still got through, hitting the ground and only narrowly missing people stepping off the escalator.
Staff rushed to shut down the escalators going up and down, forcing the still-strong crowds onto elevators, causing a momentary queue. The escalator momentarily reopened – then staff shut it again.
The Powerhouse tells us it was a “lightweight acoustic panel” that came loose.
