Two men are in custody this afternoon after fatal assaults in two states.

Homicide detectives have arrested a 51-year-old man after a food delivery rider was fatally stabbed near Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne's city centre on Friday night, allegedly after he and a companion noticed someone tampering with their bikes.

The other assault has taken place in the New South Wales southern tablelands.
