PHNOM PENH – Opposition adviser Rong Chhun says he will keep sending appeals until freedom is restored as he seeks French President Emmanuel Macron’s help to restore his right to vote and stand for office. Chhun, an adviser to the Nation Power Party, says domestic institutions have failed to resolve his case.
He delivered a petition to the French Embassy in Phnom Penh on Nov. 4, asking Macron to intervene to have the charges against him dropped and to allow him to fully return to political activity.
The embassy had acknowledged receiving the petition but had not yet responded, Chhun said.
Cambodia hosts the 20th Francophonie Summit from Nov. 14 to 16, and Macron is attending as part of a state visit. Chhun said the president’s presence could help Cambodia restore respect for human rights and democracy, particularly ahead of the 2027 elections.
