Detailed summary

Charlie Horne, who lived in East Lothian, Scotland, has died just before Remembrance Sunday — and in an interview he had told reporters how he "never forgot" the devastation he saw 82 years ago

A D-Day veteran who served on a minesweeper which came under fire and helped clear sea mines during the Normandy landings, has died aged 100.

Charlie Horne was just 18 when he served on a small wooden minesweeper which came under fire on June 6, 1944. Mr Horne, who was one of Scotland's last surviving D-Day veterans, said the scenes of devastation he saw as the Allied forces landed in France stayed with him for the rest of his life.

The brave man, from Prestonpans in East Lothian, had also helped clear sea mines off Omaha Beach during the Normandy landings.
