If Victoria ousts Labor and votes in the Liberals, many on the left will rush to blame the press and nefarious billionaires. But they’ll be wrong. The post Evil forces, corrupt…

The world is always more interesting than we think it will be, and never as predictable as we’d like.

That’s what I was thinking of when I read about a 26-year-old Texan called Nate Hill in The Texas Tribune. He was interviewed on the eve of the US midterms in a black cowboy hat, queuing for a beer at a rally in Austin for Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico.

“They’re really pissing me off,” he said, about the ads attacking Talarico over gender and culture-war issues. Prior to this election, Nate voted for Donald Trump twice. Now, he was part of the vote that flipped a 38-year drought for the Democrats in the Republican stronghold state. What he really cared about was the Iran war and corruption.

Elon Musk should have been able to buy Nate’s vote. After all, the paper trillionaire just spent US$224 million on Texas, as part of his total US$474 million election splurge.
