US President Donald Trump has promoted Stephen Miller, the architect of some of his toughest policies on immigration and other domestic issues, to run his White House after Republicans lost control of Congress in this week's midterm elections.

His appointment as President Trump's chief of staff fired up a MAGA movement stunned by the Republican hammering in the midterms.

"It's Miller time," former congressman Matt Gaetz said, quoting, like many other allies, a famous US beer commercial.

"Stephen Miller is a dangerous xenophobe and reckless extremist who has American blood on his hands," incoming House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said.
