No place for glorifying India: Posters beside defaced Tagore mural in Bangladesh

详细摘要

Unidentified people defaced Rabindranath Tagore's mural at Khulna Railway Station with black ink. The targeted vandalism has sparked concerns over cultural intolerance and possible organised attacks.

A mural of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was defaced with black ink in Bangladesh’s Khulna, while posters placed beside it accused him of hostility towards Muslims and East Bengal. Police have launched an investigation after residents noticed the damage on Friday morning.

The mural is on the boundary wall of Khulna Railway Station, alongside portraits of prominent literary, cultural and political figures. The other portraits were left untouched, The Daily Star reported.

One of the posters read: “There is no place for Tagore, who was hostile to Muslims and East Bengal, in Titumir’s Bengal. There is no place for glorifying India.”

Khulna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Lokman Hossain said police learnt about the incident on Friday afternoon.
