East Cape National candidate Dana Kirkpatrick is leading Labour candidate Jo Luxton in the preliminary vote count.
Kirkpatrick was ahead by a margin of 2,781 votes with 23.2% of votes counted.
The electorate spans from Gisborne to Maketu on the East Coast of the North Island, and as far inland as Murupara.
